I thought you could be in lighter stages of sleep throughout the night – not sure if you dream at other stages.

Hi sleepyhead. Night terrors tend to occur out of very deep sleep (stages 3&4), and in fact you are right, there has been a relationship found whereby the deeper the sleep preceding the night terror arousal, then the more intense the actual night terror.
Andymoir, REM sleep tends to occur in the last third of the night, although we will experience some REM sleep in each sleep cycle we go through, approximately every 90+ minutes or so. We often wake-up in the moring out of or proximal to REM sleep, making dream recall easier.

Not managed on this discussion for a while. Disappointing there are not very many new people on here. What can we do to boost this population?

I will look carefully and more closely at all of the suggestions that you've made to me.

Thank you very much for giving me such a complete answer that I can work with, and for your kind words of encouragement.

    Kind regards,

    Henry

Thanks sleepyhead – we could perhaps help spread the word through leaving questions on our facebook page for 'Ask the sleep expert'?

If the facebook option is used please find a way of putting those questions onto this thread so that those of us not on facebook (or who prefer not to reveal their full identity) don't loose track of topics.
