Professor Colin Espie is Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director of the Sleep Centre at the University of Glasgow. He chairs the Scientific Committee of the European Sleep Research Society and leads the World Sleep Federation's insomnia task force. He has been researching sleep and sleep problems for over 30 years.
Professor Espie is recognised for his work on improving clinical care for people with sleep disorders, educating and training health care staff in sleep medicine and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) methods and increasing awareness of sleep quality as a public health priority. He is a leading authority on the assessment and treatment of insomnia and more generally on psychological aspects of human sleep.
Prof Colin Espie's research interests include the pathophysiology of insomnia (with an emphasis upon neurocognitive processes), primary and secondary sleep disturbance (particularly sleep and depression, and sleep and cancer), cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, critical mechanisms in CBT, issues of sleep therapy compliance, and clinical effectiveness trials investigating community delivery models of insomnia care.
As Scientific and Clinical Director of Sleepio Prof Espie co-authors all course material, oversees the writing of expert Library articles and ensures ongoing clinical standards.
